The Emahoy Tsege Mariam Music (ETM) Foundation is a non-profit organization registered in the state of Virginia to teach classical and jazz music to children in Africa and assist American children to study music in Africa.
The ETM Foundation celebrates the life and musical endowment of Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru, the first classical music composer and solo pianist in Ethiopia. She is an 85 years old nun living in the Ethiopian Orthodox monastery in Jerusalem, Israel.
Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru first published her piano compositions in 1973 and used the proceeds from sales of her music to benefit orphaned children in Ethiopia. In keeping with this tradition ETM Foundation gives disadvantaged children access to classical and jazz music genres. Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru donated some of her previously published and unpublished music for the use of the ETM Foundation.
The ETM Foundation's mission is to create an opportunity for children from less privileged communities to:
become conversant with classical and jazz music genres,
study musical instruments, write music compostions, and perform in public
have support to develop their talent and interest in music, and
lift up their spirit with music by providing music videos and organizing cultural programs in orphanages and in distressed environments.
The
ETM Foundation will sponsor young adults from the United States to study
abroad on short term exchange programs and expose them to traditional
music in Ethiopia and in other parts of Africa. Exchange students will
also share their knowledge of classical and jazz music with those in
Ethiopia and in other parts of Africa where they will spend short
periods to study music.
In Ethiopia, the ETM Foundation
provides economically disadvantaged children with an opportunity to
explore their musical interests and cultivate their talents.
